Keanu Reeves as John Wick
. This movie is reminiscent of his best movies e.g. Speed and The Matrix but it still falls short being magnificent.
It's funny because I just posted a review of a movie made by The Matrix directors, the Wachowskis brothers.
The start of the movie shows an unassuming man who just lost his wife. After his wife's funeral, he is given a puppy, Daisy as a present from his deceased wife. He eventually grows to love the puppy.

One day, he's asked to sell his '69 Mustang Mach 1 at a petrol station by a bunch of Russian thugs led by Iosef (Alfie Allen, from The Game of Thrones fame). John Wick refuses and on the night itself, he's attacked in his home by Iosef and his crew leaving John half dead, Daisy dead and his car stolen.

Iosef sends John's car to a workshop operated by Aurelio (John Leguizamo) for modification. When Aurelio sees the car, he immediately rejects Iosef and wishes him well.

When John wakes up, we slowly learn that he's not an ordinary man. He cleans himself up, buries Daisy and goes to a Aurelio's workshop where he knows all the stolen car goes.
He confronts Aurelio and is told that Iosef is the son of Viggo (Michael Nyqvist), his former mob employer. Aurelio also informs  Viggo about Iosef's misadventure and Iosef himself is hit by Viggo.

John Wick turns out to be Viggo's best assassin who was allowed to retire after completing a final impossible task.
Viggo puts a $2 million bounty on John Wick to prevent him killing Iosef and first offers John's associate, Marcus (Willem Dafoe) who is also an assassin.
John goes to the Hotel Continental, where it turns out most assassins stay. He goes to the owner, Winston (Ian McShane) to locate Iosef. He's given the help required and promptly goes to kill everyone who stands in his way to reach Iosef.

Safe to say, the pace of the movie never stops there when he encounters killers with his same skills and gets a lot of injuries in the end.
However, he still manages to get Iosef and eventually Viggo. In summary, don't mess with John Wick ...

Watchability : 6 / 10 - lots of violence and not much on character development. Totally action oriented and less dialogue as befits a Keanu Reeves movie.

2015 Movie Review - Wild Card

Category: Movies

Wild Card is can be a confusing movie. In terms of action, it has plenty. But the storyline is a mess.

The movie is set in the backdrop of Las Vegas with Nick Wild (Jason Statham) faking out a fight so the winner can impress a pretty girl, DD (Sofia Vergara). After that, he gets another job from millionaire Cyrus Kinnick (Micheal Angarano). He does a poor potrayal of a rich kid who employs Nick to "kill the fear that lives inside him". Nick brings Cyrus around some of the casinos but in the end ditches Cyrus.

The next day, out of the blue comes another pretty girl, Holly (Dominik Garcia-Lorido) who helped Nick when he was down and out. She has come to collect her debt from Nick. In the scene from the movie, we learnt she is dumped from a car in front of a hospital, beaten nearly half to death.

She slowly reveals to Nick who her assailant was and what he did to her. The villain in this movie is Mafioso Danny DeMarco (Milo Ventimiglia, from Hero fame). Holly wants revenge and Nick delivers it. He also manages to pick up $ 50k from DeMarco and shares it with Holly before she escapes Vegas.

This is when the movies shifts to Nick's compulsive uncontrollable gambling habit (what else do you expect in Vegas). He literally gambles big with the money he got from DeMarco and wins back more than three fold.

Until the final round of course where he loses all.... and also attacked by DeMarco's men in the casino.. This is when the action starts fast and he escapes literally unharmed.

Baby (Stanley Tucci), who is the crime boss of Vegas confronts Nick due to DeMarco's complaint that Nick killed two of his men. Baby eventually finds out the truth about what happened. Baby releases Nick and humiliates DeMarco.
Subsequently, Nick meets Cyrus in a diner for coffee but DeMarco and his men arrives to kill Nick. Cyrus provides a distraction for Nick to escape but this time Nick goes all out to kill DeMarco and his men.
In the end, Nick is given $500k from Cyrus and plane ticket. A reward from Cyrus and the end.
Watchability : 4 / 10 - doesn't really inspire any memorable moments. The only good thing is the action scenes where Nick fights with utensils or knife.
